Fabian Cowdrey Signs for Minster
Minster CEO Neil Hosken presents Fabian with his MCC cap
Minster Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of former Kent all-rounder Fabian Cowdrey.
The 25-year-old called time on his professional career last March when he left Kent by mutual consent. He was one of nine youngsters selected to join the first intake at the club’s new Junior Academy in 2006 and joined the professional staff in 2011 before going on to make his debut in all formats in 2013. Cowdrey scored seven half-centuries and took 34 wickets in 60 white ball appearances for the club while he added two half-centuries in 16 County Championship matches for Kent.
The third generation of the Cowdrey family - after father Chris, uncle Graham and grandfather Lord Colin to play for Kent - he admitted at the time it was not an easy decision to make but “for my own well-being, it is the right time to leave. I was proud to have followed in the footsteps of my father and grandfather and play for my home county.” Lord Colin Cowdrey played more than 100 Tests for England whilst father Chris also represented England and uncle Graham represented Kent.
But now, after playing in the Shepherd Neame Kent League, Premier Division for Lordswood in the summer of 2017, Fabian Cowdrey has accepted the invitation to join the ambitious island club, who were clear winners of the Division 4 title last season.
He will be joined at the club by his twin brother, reality TV star and musician Julius and their opening Division 3 game with Minster will be at home against Sibton Park on May 5th.
Fabian said: “After meeting with Minster CEO Neil Hosken, I could not help but be impressed by his vision for the club. The club have a thriving youth section and a group of talented senior squad members and I can’t wait for the summer. Over the past couple of years I have felt a little disconnected with the game but I look forward to playing regularly and passing on some of my knowledge to the club’s players. It will be a great challenge and one I am looking forward to.”
Minster’s CEO Mr Hosken said: “We are delighted to have Fabian on board. He is a great lad and will be a huge asset to our club. Here at Minster we don’t believe in standing still as a club. The best players on Sheppey want to be part of our journey and Fabian agreeing to join us is testament to our ambition.”
Now on the brink of fielding four Saturday sides, Minster as a cricket club are seeing growth of membership and participation each year. The 1st and 2nd XI have won a combined 10 league titles in the last 14 seasons and a thriving junior section now boasts over 50 children and counting. Its 200+ members show what progress is being made and is testament to the hard work of the people behind the scenes. The signing of Fabian Cowdrey is a huge statement of intent and is terrific news for both the club and cricket in the Swale area.
